Golbon

Golbon currently resides in Chicago Illinois, where she is completing her B.A. at Columbia College Chicago in film and photography with a minor in theater. Her family roots stem from Shiraz and Tehran, where she was born in 1983. Missing Iran’s roadside juice stands, she has made the west coast her home for the past 19 years.

After graduating from high school in Portland Oregon, an apartment fire inspired her to cut her hair and embark on a three month journey through South America. Her trip eventually focused on Argentina and Brazil, in pursuit of the infectious rhythms of SAMBA, her passion as a dancer and percussionist.

Meeting Abbas Kiarostami in Sao Paulo, floating by hammock down the Amazon River with “malaria”, drinking large amounts of açai on the beaches of Rio, and losing her camera along with 1,300 digital photos motivated her to return once again and begin work on her documentary “projectamericas”.

Work & Style

The first time I went to Brazil, I encountered masses of pleading kids with hands out and tired eyes pouting bellow me. I constantly witnessed packs of young children in tatters shooed through the streets, begging for food. No one seemed to pay attention to their dried tears. Mumbling and hanging on for dear life, they tried to survive in a society that had abandoned them.

I started ProjectAmericas after deciding to dedicate my images to spreading awareness of the situation surrounding the millions of children who are born into poverty, abuse and over populated families every year. Often lacking the luxury of pursuing a creative outlet or the privilege of something as simple as playtime, these kids never dream or conceptualize a future with positive possibilities.

Currently, my work is focused on capturing the faces and adjacent realities of this forgotten generation. I travel, sharing the art of photography and observing the beauty behind their sad existence. I aim to share their struggle with the world, while inspiring creative vision and motivation for a better future. Whether in a local or global scale, I encourage all to use art to inspire and create change.
