March 27, 2009 - San Francisco - In what is becoming something of a tradition, Iranians once again poured into the San Francisco City Hall bringing with them the revelry and joy of the Persian New Year, NoRooz.

This year Ross Mirkarimi hosted the event in his offices and the hallways in a uniquely enjoyable fashion, which allowed for a much more accessible and informal gathering that created spontaneous moments for all to enjoy.

The added feature this year was an impressive display of artwork displaying new works by newcomers, Farzad Naimi, Omid Zebarjadi, few paintings by Mohammad Hourian and a new exciting series recently painted by our very own Amir Salamat. Curated by Beyond Persia, as part of it's ongoing mission to promote and deliver Persian art for appreciation, as expected the artwork and the presence of the artists themselves, generated much discussion.

The sumptuous buffet of the most delectable and favorite Persian dishes, courtesy of Aramesh design was combined with an impressively decorated traditional Haft-Seen.

Music was provide by the Ebrahimi Brothers, who played the traditional NoRooz "Saz-o-Dohol" procession, as well as classic Persian instrumental music.

Staffer Rick read descriptions of the Haft Seen items and their symbolic meanings, along with explanations for the attendees new to Persian New Year, NoRooz traditions. Ross Mirkarimi, was clearly thrilled with the turnout and having done this for several years now, has happily adopted the traditional, greetings, "Eideh Shoma Mobarak!" (May your Celebration be Blessed), and "Saleh No Mobarak" (May your New Year be Blessed), as well as the most important tradition, the 2-cheek peck!

This year's celebration, given the current economic conditions in the country, was a logical departure from the elaborate productions in past years, in which the entire City Hall rotunda was occupied, for a formal evening attire Ball event. The informality and down to earth-ness this year lent a much more charming, intimate and closer feel, which was clearly appreciated by everyone.

Thanks to Ross Mirkarimi and his staffers Rick and Vallie, who show with each year, what a good sport, and true friend he is to the Iranian-American community.

Note: This event was co-sponsored and supported by the generous donations provide by: Sia and Sami Tahbaz, Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, Dr. Elahe Enssani, Shiva Pakdel, and Sassaneh Solaimani.
